Belmond is a city in Wright County, Iowa, United States. It is located along U.S. Route 69 , 14 miles (23 km) by road from Clarion , the county seat. The population was 2,463 in the 2020 census , a decline from 2,560 in 2000 .
The outbreak produced a violent F5 tornado that devastated Belmond, Iowa, killing six and injuring 172, although the F5 rating is disputed. In all, 23 tornadoes touched down across four states, killing six people and injuring 225 others.
Damage was relatively light for the remainder of the track northeast and east of town, with the tornado later roping out and dissipating to the east-southeast of Belmond. The weather service's Storm Prediction Center issued a tornado watch for far western Iowa counties around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. A second watch, issued around 1:15 p.m. covered the rest of the state.
