Rangpur city received recognition as the divisional headquarters of Rangpur district on 16 December 1769. In 1890 , the then Chairman of the municipal corporation, Raja Janakiballav Sen of Dimla Zamindar House, renovated the canal, which is now known as Shyama Sundari Khal, to address flooding, mosquito, and malaria outbreaks.
