Clobetasol is believed to work by activating steroid receptors. [8] Clobetasol propionate was patented in 1968 and came into medical use in 1978. [13] It is available as a generic medication. [10] In 2022, it was the 156th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3 million prescriptions. [14] [15]
Clobetasol is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid. A propionate ester of clobetasol, clobetasol propionate , has also been marketed, and is far more widely used in comparison. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
In dermatology, topical clobetasone butyrate helps to reduce the itchiness and erythema associated with eczema and dermatitis. [5]In ophthalmology, clobetasone butyrate 0.1% eye drops have been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of dry eyes in Sjögren syndrome.
In two other studies of Cal/BD ointment, 1 patient of 19 (5.3%) had adrenal suppression, as did 5 patients of 32 (15.6%) after 4 weeks of treatment. In the latter study, it may be noted that patients used Cal/BD ointment on the body in addition to Cal/BD topical suspension on the scalp.
