The league was established in 1972 as the Edmonton Metropolitan Junior Hockey League. League playoff winners face off against the winners of the other Alberta "B" leagues in the Alberta Provincial Junior B Hockey Championship. The Provincial winner earns the chance to compete for the Western Canadian Junior "B" Crown, the Keystone Cup.

In 1971, the league was demoted and renamed the Great Lakes Junior "C" Hockey League. In 1974, the team simplified their name to the "Blades". Blades player during the 2013-14 season. The Blades have won a league title in their franchise history, the 1970 Border Cities Jr. D championship.
The Welland franchise, under any of its various names, was formed in 1975 as part of the Niagara District Junior B Hockey League, and joined the Golden Horseshoe "B" in 1979.
