McLean County is a U.S. county in the east central region of Illinois, and is the largest county by land area in the state. According to the 2020 Census, it had a population of 170,954. [1] Its county seat is Bloomington. [2] McLean County is included in the Bloomington–Normal, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The McLean County Museum of History is an AAM accredited [1] institution located in Bloomington, Illinois. It is the principal asset of the McLean County Historical Society, an Illinois nonprofit organization, which was founded in 1892 to study local history. The Museum moved into its current location in 1991.

Downtown Bloomington and the McLean County Courthouse & Square are seen in this 1914 image. The McLean County Courthouse housed the McLean County Circuit Court from 1903 to 1976. The original construction was completed in 1868 at a cost of $461,640. [2] On June 19, 1900, a fire destroyed many of the buildings in the square and the courthouse.
LeRoy was the first of eight towns to be laid out within the present boundaries of McLean County during the great Illinois town-founding boom which peaked in the summer of 1836. [6] LeRoy was located on a low mound, on prairie land, where the Bloomington to Danville state road crossed the road from Shelbyville to Chicago .
