Built in 1851, and originally called Henshall Place, it was the first cemetery recorded in Oconomowoc. [ citation needed ] The cemetery then moved to Walnut Street. In 1864, the Wisconsin Legislature approved the removal of all the bodies from Oconomowoc Cemetery on Walnut Street to the current La Belle Cemetery grounds. [ 2 ]
March 31 - The mutilated body of seven-year-old Barbara Gaca, missing since March 24 and the subject of a massive search effort, [109] was discovered in a wooded area southwest of Pontiac. An autopsy showed that she had been raped, strangled, stabbed 15 times, and struck with a heavy blow on the back of her head.
The paper was founded on August 22, 1924, as the Lakeland Evening Ledger.In 1927, it bought its main competitor, the morning Lakeland Star-Telegram.By 1930, it was obvious that Lakeland could not support two papers, so Ledger Publishing Company merged the two papers into a single morning paper, the Lakeland Ledger and Star-Telegram.
The local historical society traces its origins to The Pontiac Gazette, founded in 1843. The paper has been published under various names, including The Pontiac Press, until it was renamed The Oakland Press in 1972. [3] Original editorials and reporting, including major-sport beat writers, are also carried in the sister paper The Macomb Daily.

Large houses were established around the Oconomowoc lakes, particularly Oconomowoc Lake and Lac La Belle. The population grew so much that Oconomowoc incorporated as a city in 1865, [14] and by 1880 it had a population of 3,000. [6] In August 1899 a professional golf tournament hosted by the Oconomowoc Country Club was won by Harry Turpie. [15]
