Huntsville is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,879 at the 2020 census , [ 5 ] up from 2,346 in 2010. During the American Civil War in 1862, it was the site of what became known as the Huntsville Massacre .
The Huntsville massacre was the Civil War killing of eight men (a ninth survived), including three Confederate officers, by Union soldiers on January 10, 1863, outside Huntsville, Arkansas. The commanding officer resigned and faced charges, but they were dropped after witnesses for a trial could not be produced. [ 1 ]
The Huntsville Airport land was purchased from Bryan and Kathleen Mitchusson in November of 1983, with construction starting shortly afterward. The land was purchased with grant money that the State of Arkansas reserves from aviation fuel sales tax and aviation-related sales tax. The 3600′ runway is the highest airport elevation in Arkansas.
Madison County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas.As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,521. [1] The county seat is Huntsville. [2] The county was formed on September 30, 1836, and named for Madison County, Alabama, the home of some early settlers.
A portion between I-49 and AR 112 opened April 30, 2018, and is currently designated as AR 612. [ 7 ] On May 20, 2021, Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma introduced legislation to designate the portion of US-412 between I-35 in Noble County, Oklahoma , and I-49 in Springdale as a future Interstate.
Huntsville School District (formally Huntsville School District 1) is a public school district based in Huntsville, Madison County, Arkansas. The school district is the 3rd largest school district by area served, encompassing 747 square miles. [3] This district and its schools are accredited by AdvancED.
There are different snow reporting sites within New Orleans, but the oldest records from a sub-station that's no longer in service reported 10 inches of snow in 1895, and 14.4 inches in 1909.
The Huntsville High School mascot is the eagle with school colors of maroon and white. The Huntsville Eagles participate in various interscholastic activities in the Class 4A-1 Conference administered by the Arkansas Activities Association. From the fall 2014 through spring 2017 school years, they will compete in the 4A-1 Conference.
