We are home to the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Our paintings are on show 361 days a year, free of charge.

When the Gallery was founded in 1824, the first 38 paintings came from the private art collection of the banker John Julius Angerstein. Our world-class collection of paintings has grown considerably over the last two centuries. Today, we have over 2,300 works, spanning the major traditions of Western European painting.
Due to our revised security measures, we are not currently offering advanced booking for general admission to the Gallery. The Gallery remains free for all to visit. Visitors can enter at the Portico Entrance.
