The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel in Pensacola, Florida, United States is a minor basilica of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.St. Michael's parish was established in 1781 and the present Gothic Revival-style church building was dedicated in 1886. [1]
The old church was sold for $100 to the city of Pensacola on September 11, 1956. [1] They deeded the structure to the Greater Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The present church was dedicated by Archbishop Thomas Toolen of Mobile on May 18, 1967.
St. Michael the Archangel Parish was established in 1781 in Pensacola. [10] The first Catholic church in Tallahassee, Blessed Sacrament, was finished in 1845. [11] In 1968, the Florida portion of the Diocese of Mobile was transferred into the Diocese of St. Augustine, which included the rest of Florida. [12]

In 1984, the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee began publishing their own version of the newspaper. [5] In 1990, the Florida Catholic absorbed The Voice published by the Archdiocese of Miami and began serving that area. The addition of Miami gave the paper a circulation of 140,000, serving six out of the seven dioceses in the state.
