Thomas Dent Mütter (March 9, 1811 – March 19, 1859) was an American surgeon [1] born in Richmond, Virginia.Orphaned at the age of 8 and raised by a distant relative, [2] he attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia (1824) [3] [4] and graduated with an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1831.
The Mütter Museum notes that she "advocated for more research, established networks of communication with others with FOP, and educated both the public and medical professionals about the disease." [ 2 ] She was involved in the International FOP Association , or IFOPA, and cut the ribbon at the opening of UPenn's FOP Research Laboratory.

His father was a doctor and pathologist interested in snake venom, and Mitchell would continue his research later on.
