  2. What is so bad about Caribbean Medical Schools?

    forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/what-is-so-bad-about...

The pool of US applicants from the Caribbean is viewed differently by Program Directors. The DDx for a Caribbean grad is pretty off-putting: bad judgment, bad advice, egotism, gullibility, overbearing parents, inability to delay gratification, IA's, legal problems, weak research skills, high risk behavior.

May 13, 2018. #1. Hey everyone. I was hoping to gain some opinions about Caribbean medical schools. I know that there is "the big 4" including St George, American university of the Caribbean, Saba, and Ross, but I also know there are lots of other lesser known schools that I have heard are well run programs. Schools like Trinity, AUA, and there ...

Caribbean school chances. Hello all, I am a recent graduate with a cumulative 2.99 GPA, with a 2.74 science GPA. I also just took the MCAT and scored a 485 (Yes, its low). I was wondering what my chances of getting into a Caribbean school would be (Ross, AUA, AUC, Saba, Trinity and St. Matthews).

Carribean is more expensive, with fewer instructors and larger class sizes. I am also considering it as a last resort, but I would suggest comparing the cost of attending a US school for 4 years to a Carribean school for 9 trimesters, and factoring into your spreadsheet the expected compounded interest (higher for SABA b/c it's not eligible for staffords) for 3 to 5 years of residency ...

Bad grades and scores are the least of the deficits from a PD's standpoint. A strong academic showing in a Caribbean medical school does not erase this stigma. It fact it increases the perception that the reason for the choice was on the above-mentioned list! Just about everyone from a Caribbean school has one or more of these problems and PDs ...

Even if there were enough residency slots, US does not produce enough doctors to fill all those slots. Caribbean schools and other IMGs fill that gap. In fact the match rates for Caribbean schools have been on the up and up the last few years and in fact for US students its going down (not significantly).
