The Age of Innocence is a 1995 photography and poetry book by David Hamilton.The book contains images of early-teen girls, often nude, accompanied by lyrical poetry. Images are in a boudoir setting [1] and photographed mainly in colour using a soft-focus filter, with some shots in black-and-white.
The Ivy League nude posture photos were taken in the 1940s through the 1970s of all incoming freshmen at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania (which are members of the Ivy League) and Seven Sisters colleges (as well as Swarthmore), ostensibly to gauge the rate and severity of rickets, scoliosis, and lordosis in the population.
The book is published by Aperture and contains 37 duotone images of 12-year-old girls. The girls are the children of friends and relatives of Mann in her home state Virginia. [1] Unlike Mann's later work, the images within the book do not feature nudity. The book is dedicated to Mann's husband, Larry. [2]
