He attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, where he played basketball, soccer, and competed in track & field.At the 1932 Maryland state track meet, he won the 100-yard dash with a time of 10.2 seconds and set a state shot put record—50 feet (15 meters)—that stood for 28 years.
