Sand Hill WMA is located on 1,987 acres (804 ha) of rugged, hilly oak-hickory woodlands interspersed with timber, oil and gas development sites. [ 2 ] The WMA is located on both sides of U.S. Route 50 at the Wood/Ritchie county line, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Parkersburg.

The Carolina Sandhills NWR is dedicated to the preservation of a portion of the Carolina Sandhills, a distinct ecosystem characterized by inland sand dunes, [3] thin or absent topsoil, and frequent brush fires. Recurrent, noncatastrophic fires tend to remove invasive shrubs and maximize the health of fire-tolerant species such as the longleaf pine.
The Carolina Sandhills region is characterized by xeric sand community vegetation dominated by pine trees, [9] [10] [11] which caused it to formerly be known as Carolina and Georgia's Piney Woods. Much of the Carolina Sandhills is known for an ecosystem of longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris ) and wiregrass ( Aristida stricta ).

The rally takes place within the Sand Hills State Forest, part of the Sandhills region of the Carolinas. Most rallies are held on closed tarmac or gravel roads; sandblast rally roads are almost entirely sand. Some of the roads are compacted by heavy trucks, some of the more infrequently used roads are quite soft.
