The FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, also known as the Basketball World Cup for Women or simply the FIBA Women's World Cup, is an international basketball tournament for women's national teams held quadrennially. It was created by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
16 teams (four per continent) participated in two tournaments, where the winning team advanced to the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments. [1] Originally, the 16 teams would play for only one spot in the global qualifiers. However, on 28 November 2023, FIBA decided to increase to spots from one to two. [4]
On 25 March 2022, following a review of the current FIBA women's basketball system, FIBA expanded the World Cup back to 16 teams after reducing the teams to 12 teams in 2022. [6] The expansion brings the numbers of teams that qualified back to the same count as the World Cups between 1990 and 2018.
