On April 1, 1979, the channel expanded into a national network named Nickelodeon. The first program broadcast on Nickelodeon was Pinwheel, a preschool series created by Dr. Vivian Horner, who also conceived the idea for the channel itself. [1] It was produced over a half-year period in 1979, when the network hired its future president Geraldine Laybourne to make two pilots for the show.
