Every Toyota vehicle has a model code which describes the basic vehicle (e.g. Corolla), its generation and major options (engine type, gearbox type, body style, grade level). The model codes fall into three periods, 1937 to late 1950s, late 1950s to late 1970s and late 1970s to present.
In April 1971 all vehicle codes become double digit across the country. Double digit codes finally stopped being issued in 1999. By the early 1970s, three wheeled passenger cars were no longer in production and some prefectures began to issue the double digit codes 77, 78 and 79 as an 'overflow series' for passenger cars 2000cc and under.

In its home market of Japan, the XV10 Camry iteration was known as the Toyota Scepter. The previous series of narrow body compact-sized cars continued on using the Camry name in Japan.
