The following are lists of highest-grossing Greek films screened at cinemas in Greece and globally. The commercial course of Greek cinema has changed over time. The more successful periods are the period of 1950s and 1960s, often called the golden age of Greek cinema, and the recent 2000s.
Greek films or (Greek co-productive films) have won accolades in the most famous International Film Festival such as Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Cannes Festival, Venice Festival, Berlin Festival, Cyprus International Film Festival and other. Below are considered the awarded Greek films in the most notable international film festival.
In the spring of 1897, the Greeks of Athens watched the first cinematic ventures (short movies in "journal"). In 1906 Greek cinema was born when the Manakis brothers started recording in Macedonia, and the French filmmaker "Leons" produced the first "Newscast" from the midi-Olympic games of Athens (the unofficial Olympic games of 1906).
After Greek films that were mostly in English (and thus ineligible for the Foreign Language Film award) won the award in 2005 and 2007, Greece decided to revise the selection process. Beginning in 2008, the Greek submission is determined by an ad hoc committee appointed under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture .
