In 1940, the War Department approved the formation of a test platoon of Airborne Infantry under the direction and control of the Army's Infantry Board. A test platoon of volunteers was organized from Fort Benning's 29th Infantry Regiment, and the 2nd Infantry Division was directed to conduct tests to develop reference data and operational procedures for air-transported troops.

In order to be eligible to attend any Parachute Rigger courses and subsequently be awarded the Parachute Rigger Badge, an individual must first have graduated from the Basic Airborne Course at Ft. Moore, Georgia. The badge is awarded upon graduation from a parachute rigger course as specified by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School.
Upon assignment to the Special Forces, soldiers are made to undergo the Basic Airborne Course. They will then attend the Special Forces Combat Qualification Course (SFCQC) a 20-week course which includes a test mission phase will equip students with a much higher level of combat skills that they can apply in any operational environment.
The 1st Battalion serves as the training unit for the U.S. Army Airborne School. Its Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) conducts the Jumpmaster and Pathfinder Courses.
