The Falls Road (from Irish túath na bhFál 'territory of the enclosures' [1]) is the main road through West Belfast, Northern Ireland, running from Divis Street in Belfast City Centre to Andersonstown in the suburbs. The name has been synonymous for at least a century and a half with the Catholic community in the city.
The street itself was named in honour of Queen Victoria. It includes the Monument to the Unknown Woman Worker, which is in a prominent walking route into Belfast Great Victoria Street railway station. There are also a number of churches located along the street. Great Victoria Street looking northwards with the Crown Liquor Saloon on the right.
The upper part was formerly named John Street, and the lower part was named Hercules Street after Sir Hercules Langford. [1] Royal Avenue was established in 1881. [1] Since that time, it has served as Belfast's principal shopping thoroughfare, and today it is lined with many leading department stores and top name shops.
The main Belfast campus of Ulster University is located in York Street which is the continuation of the Shore Road into the city centre. A campus of the Northern Regional College , a third-level institution, is also located on the Whiteabbey section of the Shore Road.
The Malone Road area of Belfast has been home to many notable and historical people. From Moyses Hill , who received a 61-year lease in 1606 [ 9 ] John Eccles was the first known resident of Cranmore House ., [ 9 ] later John Templeton lived on the road.
The Holylands, The Holy Land or The Holyland is a residential area of inner-south Belfast, Northern Ireland.Composed of a series of streets behind The Queen's University of Belfast near to the River Lagan, the area has been dubbed 'the Holyland' from its street names: Jerusalem Street, Palestine Street, Damascus Street, Carmel Street and Cairo Street.
Belfast City Centre is the central business district of Belfast, Northern Ireland.. The city centre was originally centred on the Donegall Street area. Donegall Street is now mainly a business area, but with expanding residential and entertainment development as part of the Cathedral Quarter scheme - St. Anne's, Belfast's Anglican cathedral is located here.
