Sporting Clays was originally used with live pigeons in the early 1900s, until they started using clay targets. When clay target began being used the sport became more popular. Rather than using standard distances, target angles and sizes, sporting clay courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, and even rabbits.
The area was first surveyed as early as 1824, and the current eastern boundary of the township is along the Michigan meridian. The township was first settled in 1836 by the Rolfe family. The Michigan legislature approved the creation of Vevay Township from a portion of Aurelius Township on March 6, 1838.

The township is in northwestern Mason County. U.S. Route 31 runs north to south along the township's eastern border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.50 square miles (94.53 km 2), of which 35.93 square miles (93.06 km 2) are land and 0.57 square miles (1.48 km 2), or 1.56%, are water. Amber Township is in western Mason County, with the city of Scottville on the township's eastern border. Ludington , the county seat , is less than 5 miles (8 km) to the west. The Pere Marquette River , a west-flowing tributary of Lake Michigan , forms the southern border of the township.
