Mendelssohn's grandfather was the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, but Felix was initially raised without religion until he was baptised aged seven into the Reformed Christian church. [1] She was descended on both sides from distinguished Jewish families; her parents were Abraham Mendelssohn (who was the son of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn), and Lea Salomon, a granddaughter of the entrepreneur Daniel Itzig. Sebastian Hensel was born on June 16, 1830, the son of the pianist and composer Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847) and painter Wilhelm Hensel (1794–1861) in Berlin.
