Springfield railway line is a 13.6 km (8.5 mi) [1] suburban railway line in Brisbane, Australia that branches from the Ipswich/Rosewood line after Darra railway station. Construction of the line started on 5 July 2010 , and it opened on 2 December 2013. [ 2 ]
The early AC electric multiple units were referred to by a two-letter code. This was adapted for the DC third-rail system that was adopted by the Southern Railway, with units being given a three-letter code (sometimes two letters) prefixed by the number of cars in each unit, e.g. 4SUB for a four-car suburban unit.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, a significant rail electrification program was completed in the Australian state of Queensland. The electrified Queensland network is the largest in Australia with over 2,000 kilometres electrified, the next biggest is New South Wales with 640 kilometres, that is served mainly as passenger operations.
Springfield Central Station's 12 m (39 ft) wide island platform [6] is elevated above the station concourse and is almost entirely covered by the roof structure (a feature not present in most Queensland Rail City Network stations). The concourse runs the length of the station, and is surrounded by glass along large portions of both sides.
Queensland Railways was the first operator in the world to adopt a narrow gauge (in this case 1,067 mm or 3 ft 6 in) for a main line, [1] and this remains the system-wide gauge in Queensland. The colony of Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859, and the new government was keen to facilitate development and immigration.
Thus the scale and approximate prototype gauge are represented, with the model gauge used (9 mm for H0e gauge; 6.5 mm for H0f gauge) being implied. [ 2 ] The scales used include the general European modelling range of Z, N, TT, H0, 0 and also the large model engineering gauges of I to X, including 3 + 1 ⁄ 2 , 5, 7 + 1 ⁄ 4 and 10 + 1 ⁄ 4 ...
The section from Roma Street to Corinda (11 km (6.8 mi) was quadruplicated in 1963, [4] and extended to Darra (a further 5 km (3.1 mi)) in 2011, which became the junction for the first section of the new Springfield line at that time.
