[3] By 1850, the archdiocese was operating ten parishes in the City of St. Louis. [5] During the American Civil War, Kenrick maintained a neutral position in a strongly divided Missouri.

St. Francis de Sales Church (the Oratory of Saint Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholic Oratory located in south St. Louis, Missouri, United States. It is the second largest church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis after the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis (St. Louis). The church is popularly known as the "Cathedral of South St. Louis".
The cathedral sits on a 25-acre (100,000 m 2) site that also includes a former Carmelite monastery, the Alphonse J. Schwartze Memorial Catholic Center, St. Joseph Cathedral School, and the Cathedral of Saint Joseph parish offices, which were formerly a convent that housed the Sisters of Mercy. The current pastor is the Reverend Fr. Louis Nelen. [1]
