In 1864, Charles Sanford of Madison County, New York, purchased 213 acres (0.86 km 2) of land where the village is now located, along with 1,000 acres (4.0 km 2) of pine land. The site was first known as the "Salt-Spring Reserve", and was the location of the first salt well in the state.

Sanford Lake was a man-made reservoir located in Midland County, Michigan, but is no longer present since the failure of the dam in May 2020. It was formed by the damming of the Tittabawassee River near the village of Sanford, Michigan .
The Detroit Eight Mile Wall, also referred to as Detroit's Wailing Wall, Berlin Wall or The Birwood Wall, is a one-foot-thick (0.30 m), six-foot-high (1.8 m) separation wall that stretches about 1 ⁄ 2 mile (0.80 km) in length. 1 foot (0.30 m) is buried in the ground and the remaining 5 feet (1.5 m) is visible to the community.
