Psalm 136 is the 136th psalm of the Book of Psalms, beginning in English in the King James Version: "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. The Book of Psalms is part of the third section of the Hebrew Bible , and a book of the Christian Old Testament .
The phrase is used many times in the Bible to describe God's powerful deeds during the Exodus: Exodus 6:6, Deuteronomy 4:34 5:15 7:19 9:29 11:2 26:8, Psalms 136:12. Let us with a gladsome mind is a hymn written in 1623 by John Milton, a pupil at St. Paul's School, [1] at the age of 15 as a paraphrase of Psalm 136. It was set to music as the hymn tune known as Monkland by the organist John Bernard Wilkes using a melody written by John Antes .
