Standards-based mathematics: a vision for pre-college mathematics education in the United States and Canada, focused on deepening student understanding of mathematical ideas and procedures, and formalized by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics which created the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
The Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators named Sears as their 2016 Mathematics Teacher Educator of the Year. [3] Sears was named to the 2021 class of Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, [5] becoming the first Black faculty member at the University of South Florida to win this honor.
Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School supports the improvement of grade 5–9 mathematics education by serving as a resource for practicing and prospective teachers, as well as supervisors and teacher educators. She was named Lois Knowles Professor in 2006, and Curator's Professor in 2011. [3] She was president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators from 2009 to 2011. [5]
In 1997, the Association for Women in Mathematics honored Burns, "a mathematics educator with enormous scope and influence", with the Louise Hay Award for Contributions to Mathematics Education. [3] In 2010, the Association of Educational Publishers inducted Burns into the Educational Publishing Hall of Fame. [6]
