Ninove means "nieuw weiland" or in English, "new pasture". During Roman rule, Ninove was a small settlement located in the current "Nederwijk". With the arrival of the Franks in the 4th century AD, the settlement grew to a small agricultural town. The area on which Ninove is located was from 843 on part of the Holy Roman Empire.

The parish church at Ninove was converted into a Premonstratensian Abbey in 1137 by Gerard I, Lord of Ninove, in remembrance of his wife Gisela and himself. [1] The abbey was a filiation from Park Abbey outside Leuven .
With a total surface of 1056ha it is the second largest village in Ninove (behind Denderwindeke). With 5.888 inhabitants (in 2021) [1] it's the most populated village in Ninove, next to the centre of Ninove itself. It is perhaps most known as the arrival location for the Flemish cycling race the Tour of Flanders (1973-2011). [2]

Berlinda was born in Meerbeke (Meerbeche, Marbec) in the Low Countries, (now a district of Ninove in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders in the region of Flanders in Belgium). She was the daughter of the wealthy Count Odelard, squire of Duke Wiger of Lorraine, and his holy wife Nona.
The vicinal tramway line going from Ninove to Brussels Ninoofsepoort starts operating on September 8, 1887. It used metre-gauge rails and had its depot in Schepdaal.This depot became the national museum for the vicinal tramway on May 5, 1962, [1] but was still used as depot for the line Brussels-Ninove (line Ni) too until 1968.
