Brown colors are dark or muted shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. Browns are sometimes by mixing two complementary colors from the RYB model (combining all three primary colors). In theory, such combinations should produce black, but in practice (because of non-ideal pigments), they do not.

Lepidolite is found naturally in a variety of colors, mainly pink, purple, and red, but also gray and, rarely, yellow and colorless. Because lepidolite is a lithium-bearing mica, it is often wrongly assumed that lithium is what causes the pink hues that are so characteristic of this mineral.
Z. albomaculata is a widespread and variable species, growing from South Africa north to Kenya, varying in shades of white to cream and pink to orange-shades. Z. jucunda and Z. pentlandii are rare species with large yellow showy flowers. Z. rehmannii is a pink-flowered species with sword shaped leaves.
