A few hundred workers, most of whom were miners, sculptors, or rock climbers, used dynamite, jackhammers, and chisels to remove material from the mountain. A stairway was constructed to the top of the mountain, where ropes were fixed. Workers were supported by harnesses attached to the ropes.

The Senate bill was passed by the United States Congressional session and enacted into law by the 30th President of the United States Calvin Coolidge on February 29, 1929.

During his youth, Lincoln accompanied his father to the Black Hills of South Dakota and was present when the site for the Mount Rushmore monument was selected. Although he had originally planned to study engineering at the University of Virginia , Lincoln Borglum began work on the monument in 1933 at the age of 21 as an unpaid pointer.
