Adam's Peak is a 2,243 m (7,359 ft)-tall conical sacred mountain located in central Sri Lanka. [1] [2] It is well known for the Sri Pada (IAST: Śrī Pāda; Sinhala: ශ්රී පාද, lit. 'sacred footprint'), a 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit whose name is also used for the mountain itself.
The name Adam's Bridge appeared probably around the time of Al-Biruni (c. 1030). [2] This appears to have been premised on the Islamic belief that Adam's Peak — where the biblical Adam fell to earth — is located in Sri Lanka, and that Adam crossed over to peninsular India via the bridge after his expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
