American University was established in the District of Columbia by an Act of Congress on December 5, 1892, primarily due to the efforts of Methodist bishop John Fletcher Hurst, who aimed to create an institution that could train future public servants.
During World War II, the American Red Cross' training program, Overseas and Domestic Workers School, was also housed in Hurst Hall. The Dean's Office of the College of Arts and Sciences moved into the Asbury Building in 1960, where it remained until 1966.
