It was established on 11 September 2001. It was inaugurated by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and N. Chandrababu Naidu. It is affiliated to Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada. The medical college is run by the People's Education Society. The college has been approved by the Medical Council of India.
The university was established as "University of Health Sciences" by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and was inaugurated on 9 April by N. T. Rama Rao, the then-Chief Minister of the state. It started functioning on 1 November 1986 [ 2 ] with Rama Rao as the university's first chancellor.

24 July 2024 – The Andhra Pradesh government restored the name of Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences to its original name, Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, located in Vijayawada. Established by NTR in 1986, he also served as its first Chancellor.
