Gregory John Norman AO (born 10 February 1955) [2] [3] is an Australian former professional golfer who spent 331 weeks as world number one in the 1980s and 1990s. [4] He won 88 professional tournaments, including 20 PGA Tour tournaments and two majors: The Open Championship in 1986 and 1993.
In naming the award after Greg Norman, the PGA stated that "Not only was he number one for 331 weeks, a two time major winner and a winner 20 times on the PGA Tour, he also won 31 times on our own PGA Tour of Australasia and put Australian Golf on the world map. He has been a staunch supporter of the PGA of Australia and local golf for many years."

The 1986 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 115th Open Championship, held from 17 to 20 July at Turnberry Golf Resort, Scotland.Aided by a 63 in the second round, [2] Greg Norman won his first major championship at even-par, five strokes ahead of runner-up Gordon J. Brand.
Tway improbably holed out for birdie [5] and Norman's attempt to tie missed, as did his par-saving putt. Norman led all four majors in 1986 after the third round, but won only the Open. [6] Entering the championship, Norman was the leading money winner on the PGA Tour in 1986, with Tway in second place. [7]
