Wasaga Beach (or simply Wasaga) is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Situated along the longest freshwater beach in the world, [ 4 ] it is a popular summer tourist destination. It is located along the southern end of Georgian Bay , approximately 150 km (93 mi) north of Toronto and about 40 km (25 mi) northwest of Barrie .
In addition, the highway serves as the main route to Wasaga Beach, a popular recreational destination during the summer months. Highway 26 was first assumed by the Department of Highways, predecessor to the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario , in 1927, along an existing trunk route between Barrie and Owen Sound.

In combination with its continuation, Simcoe County Road 42, and in turn a portion of Highway 26 north of Stayner, it is a popular non-highway route (as an alternative to Highway 10 and former Highway 24) from the Greater Toronto Area to the Georgian Triangle, in particular the tourist towns of Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, and The Blue Mountains.
Georgian Bay has been known by several names. To the Ojibwe, it is known as "Spirit Lake".To the Huron-Wendat, it is known as Lake Attigouatan. Samuel de Champlain, the first European to explore and map the area in 1615–1616, called it "La Mer douce" (the sweet/calm/fresh sea), which was a reference to the bay's freshwater. [1]
