Cirque Calder is an artistic rendering of a circus created by the American artist Alexander Calder. Alexander Milne Calder (August 23, 1846 – June 4, 1923) (MILL-nee) was a Scottish American sculptor best known for the architectural sculpture of Philadelphia City Hall. [1] Both his son, Alexander Stirling Calder , and grandson, Alexander Calder , became significant sculptors in the 20th century.
Biddle once rode in the trunk of a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephant on Madison Avenue in a nationally publicized stunt to help acquire Cirque Calder into the museum's permanent collection. [2] [9] She also oversaw the moving of the museum into the Marcel Breuer-designed structure on 945 Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side. [8]
