Having begun his career as a reporter for the News Chronicle and the Daily Mail, Wilson subsequently edited the Glasgow Evening Times, The Glasgow Herald and The Scottish Sunday Standard from 1976 to 1982, before moving to London to work as deputy editor (1982–1985) and editor (1985–1990) of The Times. The Times and its sister paper The Sunday Times (founded in 1821), are published by Times Media, since 1981 a subsidiary of News UK, in turn wholly owned by News Corp.

In March 2008 it was placed 40th in the Sunday Times '100 Best Companies to Work For' in the UK. [11] The firm is the only law firm to also be included in the newspaper's Top 50 Places Where Women Want to Work, and the Top 100 Graduate Employers rankings as well as the 100 Best Companies.
Steed was Northcliffe's personal choice for the editorship, but by 1922, the press baron was increasingly frustrated by Steed's failure to return The Times to profitability. After Northcliffe's death in August 1922, the new owners, John Jacob Astor and John Walter , dismissed Steed on 24 October and brought back Dawson as editor.
