It was at this point a decision as taken to relocate the school to a new 14-acre (57,000 m 2) site on the southern edge of the town, on the Ballyshannon Road, overlooking Donegal Bay and Donegal Abbey. The new building was opened in 1982, with the school renamed as the Abbey Vocational School to reflect its new location.
