The Dakotas, also known as simply Dakota, is a collective term for the U.S. states of North Dakota and South Dakota. It has been used historically to describe the Dakota Territory , and is still used for the collective heritage, [ 2 ] culture, geography, [ 3 ] fauna, [ 4 ] sociology, [ 5 ] economy, [ 6 ] [ 7 ] and cuisine [ 8 ] of the two states.
However, there are many partial state boundaries, particularly in the Midwest, Northeast, and South, that are defined by rivers; in fact, only four mainland states (Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming) completely lack any borders defined by rivers or waterways, as well as Hawaii whose borders are the islands.
North Dakota has few named islands due to the lack of water bodies. Most islands are found in large reservoirs or in the Missouri River. Following the damming of the Missouri River, some islands were flooded and ceased to exist. They are still listed, but as historical only. [2] There are other islands in North Dakota, however many are unnamed.
