From 1968 onwards, the U.S. military replaced the M37 with the heavier-rated 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 (or five-quarter) ton Kaiser Jeep manufactured M715 family of vehicles. Rather than purpose-built tactical vehicles, these "militarized" commercial off-the-shelf ('COTS') trucks were considered underpowered and fragile compared to the M37. [ 3 ]

The M274 Mule was introduced in 1956 to supplement both the 1 ⁄ 4-short-ton (0.23-tonne) trucks ("Jeeps") and 3 ⁄ 4-short-ton (0.68-tonne) trucks (Weapons Carrier Series and M37 series) in airborne and infantry battalions.
The M-715 family saw service in the Vietnam War, but was considered underpowered and fragile, compared to the purpose-built Dodge M37 tactical trucks it was intended to replace. [2] From 1976 onwards, the U.S. military replaced the M715 series with the Dodge M880 series , again a 1 + 1 ⁄ 4 -ton militarized COTS truck.
By 1940 the US Army and Marines were using 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-ton EE dump trucks, EH 5-ton fuel tankers, EHU cabover wreckers, and other specialty vehicles. Early models were standard commercial models, with chrome trim and hubcaps, in 1942 all trucks became plainer. The military model EH was a 5-ton on road 4x2 cargo truck.
