The Ordnance Survey began producing six inch to the mile (1:10,560) maps of Great Britain in the 1840s, modelled on its first large-scale maps of Ireland from the mid-1830s. Built to keep the northern border of England secured against the threat of invasion from Scotland. Henry I of England ordered a stone castle to be constructed on the site. The list is managed by Historic England (formerly English Heritage), and currently includes about 1,600 sites. [ 1 ] As with listed buildings , parks and gardens are graded on a scale: Grade I being internationally significant sites; these are therefore the most important and constitute around 10% of the total number.
