Brown became an associate professor in 1976 and a full professor in 1981. [5] He served as chair of the mathematics department at Cornell beginning in 2002, [8] and concluding in 2006. [9] He also directed the Summer Math Institute in 2009. [10] He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1978 in Helsinki. [11]
