The university's campus in 1899. Queen's was a result of an outgrowth of educational initiatives planned by Presbyterians in the 1830s. A draft plan for the university was presented at a synod meeting in Kingston in 1839, with a modified bill introduced through the 13th Parliament of Upper Canada during a session in 1840. [21]
The Society's ultimate authority lies with the AMS Assembly, which is composed of elected representatives from each of the nine member faculty societies (Arts and Science, Engineering and Applied Science, Concurrent Education, M.B.A., Commerce, Nursing, Medicine, Physical and Health Education, and Computing, Health Sciences Society as well as non-voting representatives of the Residence Society.

Queen's first Faculty of Education was founded in 1907, but it was closed in 1920 when the training of teachers in Ontario was centralized in Toronto. The present Faculty dates from 1965, when the province approved Duncan McArthur College, a Queen's-affiliated college temporarily located at 131 Union Street (now the site of Stauffer Library).
