Controversy is the fourth studio album by the American singer-songwriter and musician Prince, released on October 14, 1981, by Warner Bros. Records. With the exception of one track, it was written and produced entirely by Prince. He also performed most of the instruments on its recording.
The extended remix features instrumental solos; Morris Day on drums; samples from "Controversy" and "Annie Christian", two other songs from the same album; and additional, more insistent lyrics. Prince performed the extended version in concert during the Controversy and 1999 tours.
Prince refers to the Abscam story in the track "Annie Christian" from his 1981 album Controversy. In 1980, folk singer Tom Paxton wrote and recorded the song "I Thought You Were an Arab" (pronounced Ay'-rab) on his album The Paxton Report.
