The Coast Community College District was created in 1947 following a special election to establish the district and Orange Coast College. [1] The district became a multi-campus operation following the construction of Golden West College in 1966, following being renamed from the Orange Coast Junior College District.

Cardenas played water polo for Golden West College. In 2002, the team won the state championship, and Cardenas was named the California Community College MVP. [1] Cardenas later transferred to the University of Southern California. In 2006, her first season with the Trojans, she ranked third on the team with 40 goals.

[3] From 1972 to 1979, Garman led the Golden West Rustlers to a record of 211 wins and 40 losses, [ 2 ] [ 4 ] and won four consecutive national junior college championships from 1975 to 1978.
