Fiat 875 cc two cylinder TwinAir engine featuring Multiair technology. MultiAir or Multiair is a hydraulically-actuated variable valve timing (VVT) and variable valve lift (VVL) engine technology enabling "cylinder by cylinder, stroke by stroke" [1] control of intake air directly via a gasoline engine's inlet valves.
Fiat was the first auto manufacturer to patent a functional automotive variable valve timing system which included variable lift. Developed by Giovanni Torazza in the late 1960s, the system used hydraulic pressure to vary the fulcrum of the cam followers (US Patent 3,641,988). [ 1 ]
The Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engine, introduced in the 1987 Alfa Romeo 75, also uses variable valve timing. [3] [4] The Alfa system varies the phase (not the duration) of the cam timing and operates on the inlet camshaft. [5] Alfa Romeo's variator is a cylindrical chamber that contains a pressure chamber and piston along with helical splines.
Fiat's TwinAir engine is a Straight-twin engine designed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies as part of its Small Gasoline Engine (SGE) family — employing Fiat’s MultiAir hydraulically actuated variable valve timing and lift technology.
Only Multi-Air heads feature electro-hydraulic variable valve timing and lift, although only on the intake side. The system is based on FIAT technology. [5] It utilizes a bore and stroke of 88 mm × 97 mm (3.46 in × 3.82 in) and a 10.0:1 compression ratio. Applications:
The system, developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, is an hydraulically-actuated variable valve timing (VVT) technology enabling "cylinder by cylinder, stroke by stroke" control of intake air directly via a gasoline engine's inlet valves. [5] In February 2019, Jaguar Land Rover announced their long-rumoured inline-6 engine.

While these engines have been phased out in the European market in favor of the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo gasoline engine, part of the smaller Fiat FIRE series, they have later been updated with dual variable valve timing (branded "DCVVT") and turbochargers, and are as of 2016 used in Trumpchi automobiles.
