Pentwater Lake is a water body adjacent to the village of Pentwater, Michigan. Its primary inlet is the Pentwater River ; its outlet is a man-made channel flowing into Lake Michigan . Pentwater Lake has a surface area of 431 acres (174 ha), a maximum depth of 50 feet (15 m), and an average depth of 27 feet (8.2 m).
In 1855, Charles Mears constructed a 70-foot-wide (21 m) channel from Pentwater Lake to Lake Michigan, lined with timber cribbing, [4] to accommodate his lumbering interests. [5] In 1858, he built a pier extending over 600 feet (180 m) into Lake Michigan where ships could dock. [ 6 ]
Mears State Park was among 13 parks established in 1920 following the creation of the Michigan State Parks Commission a year earlier. [3] The park land, which was once owned by lumber baron Charles Mears, was donated to the state by his daughter Carrie Mears. [4] The park originally comprised only 16 acres "strictly made up of lake sand."

In 2016, all of the business loop was dedicated as a part of the West Michigan Pike Pure Michigan Byway. [49] The segment of highway within the village of Pentwater was transferred to the control of the village on May 4, 2023, and the remainder of the highway was to have its signage removed, remaining an unsigned state trunkline highway. Pentwater's specialty is its location to Lake Michigan. The area is a tourist mecca in the summer, frequently visited by Chicagoans looking to get away. Pentwater has a number of bed and breakfasts, in addition to the more traditional motels. Sportfishing is popular in the area, as is shopping. The village has a number of art galleries.
The Green Quarry Site, designated 20OA7, is an archaeological site located near Pentwater, Michigan.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. [1] The site, covering 40 acres (16 ha), [1] is the only known source of Lambrix chert, which was used for a variety of prehistoric tools.
