James Wilson Grimes (October 20, 1816 – February 7, 1872) was an American politician, serving as the third Governor of Iowa and a United States Senator from Iowa.
Grimes can be attributed to over 240 taxa names, either as sole author or co-author. [1] Grimes worked at the New York Botanical Garden studying Fabaceae. [2] In 1996 Grimes moved to Australia, taking up a position in the National Herbarium of Victoria, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria as Mueller Fellow July–October 1996, where he worked on developmental morphology of inflorescences in Acacia. [3]
On election day, 7 August 1854, Whig nominee James W. Grimes won the election by a margin of 2,120 votes against his opponent Democratic nominee Curtis Bates, thereby gaining Whig control over the office of Governor. Grimes was sworn in as the 3rd Governor of Iowa on 9 December 1854. [2]
