The flaps do not hole the bales. In the UK, baled silage is most often made in round bales about 1.2 m × 1.2 m (4 ft × 4 ft), individually wrapped with four to six layers of "bale wrap plastic" (black, white or green 25-micrometre stretch film). The percentage of dry matter can vary from about 20% dry matter upwards.
A baler or hay baler is a piece of farm machinery used to compress a cut and raked crop (such as hay, cotton, flax straw, salt marsh hay, or silage) into compact bales that are easy to handle, transport, and store. Often, bales are configured to dry and preserve some intrinsic (e.g. the nutritional) value of the plants bundled.
Large square bales, which can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb), can be stacked and easily transported on trucks. Large round bales, which typically weigh 300 to 400 kilograms (660–880 lb), are more moisture-resistant and pack the hay more densely (especially at the center). Round bales are quickly fed with the use of mechanized equipment.
Linhays are now largely obsolete as in England cattle are generally housed in large pole barns with corrugated iron or plastic roofs and are fed silage, either in large round bales or in troughs, chopped up by machinery. These modern structures make possible feeding and mucking out with large tractors.
Fraser produced everything from linkboxes, feed mixers, grain bruisers & ring feeders to bale, dump, silage & grain trailers, muck spreaders (both barrel and latterly rear discharge) and vacuum slurry tankers, all in a wide range of sizes. Products were shipped all across the UK & Ireland and further afield.

Bale spears can often move both round and square large bales. [3] [4] Bale squeezes are used with bales that are wrapped for silage, [5] large piles of large and small square bales, [6] as well as a special squeeze that can be used to unroll large round bales for winter feeding. [7] Bale handlers with hooks are used to move large and small ...
