NC 80 at Buck Creek Gap. NC 80 is a 37.9-mile-long (61.0 km) two-lane mountain highway between US 70, in Pleasant Gardens, and NC 226A, near Bakersville.The highway is popular with bike and motorcycle enthusiasts, because of its hairpin turns and also makes up part of the Mount Mitchell Scenic Drive between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Micaville.
Between 1929 and 1930, NC 89 was extended west to the Virginia state line. The highway was routed west of Mount Airy through Low Gap before ending at Virginia State Route 117 (SR 117) at the state line which continued toward Galax. [6] [7] On May 31, 1962, NC 89 was placed onto split streets in Mount Airy.
Mount Airy / ˈ m aʊ n t ər i / [4] is a city within Surry County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 10,676, an increase of 288 (+2.8%) from the 2010 census count of 10,388. [5] As of 2020, the city is the most populous municipality in Surry County.
In 1940 NC 104 was renumbered as NC 80. [citation needed] In 1940 NC 104 was re-introduced as a renumbering of NC 800. The route ran from US 52 to Virginia State Route 104 (now secondary SR 773) at the state border. Between 1954 and 1957 NC 104 was rerouted to its current southern terminus at NC 103. [2]

US 52/US 74, in Wadesboro US 52 was established in 1934 as a replacement of US 121/NC 66 from the Virginia state line, near Mount Airy, to Lexington and replacement of US 601/NC 80 from Lexington to the South Carolina state line, near McFarlan.
